In acting lingo, the fourth wall is the imaginary wall that separates the actors on stage from the audience. They can't interact with the people behind the wall--doing so would break the suspension of disbelief the audience needs to really get into things. The same holds true for a MUSHing environment.
In this case, everything to do with Giant Robots is real. However, this doesn't prevent our Otaku characters. If anything, it makes things better for them than ever.
There has been legitimate marketing of giant robots and other such things by companies. Haros are commonplace, the famous invention of Amuro Ray. Figurines, Toys, and Plushies of famous robots are available, especially of Gundam Fight winners. Characters can legitimately collect these items, if they have in character reason to. It's just the way the toy world is.
